This BioFirst session is organized in collaboration with Merck Serono, Ernst & Young and EPFL-HEC Executive MBA in "Management of Technology" (MoT).

The future of the Swiss biotech industry remains promising: 218 Biotech companies, CHF 224 million of venture capital flowed into Swiss Biotechs in 2006, turnover grew by a further significant 7.8% and the sector made CHF 917 million profit in 2006. The financial community has rewarded the high quality of the Swiss biotech industry over the past two years by considerably and constantly investing in companies with promising projects underway.

What are the trends for the next years and how Biotech is a driving force in the Swiss economy ?

During this First, Ernst & Young who has tracked the progress of biotechnology for two decades will present the results of its newest 2007 global survey on the state of the biotech industry.

((( Dr. Bernhard Kirschbaum, Senior Executive Vice President Reseach, Merck Serono

Previously Vice President of Pre-clinical R&D, and Head of Global Technologies for Merck KGaA, he joined the company in 2005. Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Kirschbaum was Vice President Discovery Research, Global Head of Therapeutic Domains “Thrombosis & Angiogenesis” for Sanofi-Aventis. He has also worked for Aventis, Hoechst Marion Roussel in various senior positions and headed the Centre of Applied Genomics in Martinsried. He has a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry and physiological chemistry from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and worked at Rockefeller University (New York) and the Pasteur Institute (Paris).

((( Dr. Joern-Peter Halle, Head Early Stage Licensing, Merck Serono

His position includes Scouting & Evaluation activities across all therapeutic areas and development stages and a liaison to M&A. Previously Senior Licensing Manager for Merck KGaA he had significant contributions to several in-licensing and acquisition projects. Prior to joining Merck in 2005, he co-founded Switch Biotech in 1997 where he held management positions with increasing responsibilities including the position of Chief Business Officer. He has a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Konstanz, Germany, did his post-doc in biochemistry at the Gene Center in Munich, and worked as a freelance bioinformatics consultant.

He is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Synarc Inc, San Francisco, (1998-2000) with more than 20 years of professional experience in clinical trials management and drug development. Prior to joining Synarc, Jack Barbut was the founder, Vice-Chairman and President of Clinical Services of Chrysalis International, Inc., (1981-1998) a publicly (NASDAQ) traded global full service, Contract Research Organization (CRO), with 450 employees, USD 60M in sales and USD 150 M in market capitalisation when it went public. Today it is part of MDS (NYSE), a global drug development service company with USD 1.2 B in sales and 11’000 employees. A Swiss citizen, Jack Barbut holds a MS in Electrical Engineering and a ScD in Systems Engineering from the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.

((( Gabriel Clerc, Head of Industrial Relations and Technology Transfer, EPFL

Initially R&D Engineer in the SULZER Group, Switzerland, nine years of activities in aeronautics as experimental test pilot for the Swiss Confederation. Development of industrial relations and technology transfer at EPFL since 1988. Head of the technology transfer office of EPFL since 1998. Co-founder in 2003 and president of the Swiss Technology Transfer association (swiTT - www.switt.ch), the association of Swiss technology transfer professionals having the goal to strengthen and develop innovation in Switzerland through private - public partnerships and transfers of technologies and knowledge. Initiator and coordinator since 2005 of the "alliance" industrial liaison and technology transfer programme in western Switzerland aiming more interactions between public education and research institutions and innovative SME's. Member of the board of the foundations FIT (early stage financing of start-up projects) and PSE (Science Parc located on the EPFL campus).
