How to Evaluate Opportunities in the Life Sciences

ma 07 sept - Market First @ UBS Acacias Genève

5th Bio Tuesday of 2004: A distinguished panel of experts representing a broad range of stakeholders involved in the screening, assessment and valuation of Life Sciences opportunities will explain the art and science of evaluating opportunities. Companies that sell products or services on a market can be evaluated and valued based on a number of parameters, based on their revenues and projected cash flows. But how do you valuate an idea? How does a technology transfer office place a value on an invention coming out of academia? How does an incubator decide which start-up companies to support? How does a Venture Capitalist assess the possible future value of an investment in an emerging biotech company? How does an established bio-pharma company assess the value of a product it wishes to in-license or a candidate company it is thinking of acquiring or merging with? How do investment bankers or market analysts set a share price for an unproven biotech or medical device company that only has a few young products in its pipeline?
Although many methodologies exist to assess opportunities, the risk/reward profile of each opportunity in the Life Sciences requires different investment metrics, depending on the profession of the evaluator and the stage of the opportunity.

About Bio Tuesday

Bio Tuesday events are an initiative that started in 2000 in Suisse Romande as a collaboration between Genevieve Morand of Rezonance and Jeremy Lack of Medabiotech to heighten public awareness of biotechnology and the importance of Switzerland's pharma and emerging Life Sciences industry. The concept has now been introduced in Zurich as well. We promote entrepreneurship and encourage the creation of new start-up companies in our region, which has one of the high concentrations of talent in the Life Sciences in Europe. Bio Tuesday events are free and open to the general public and attract a broad audience (min 200 - max to date of 660 attendees) from all sectors of the local community, including: investors, start-ups, multinationals, government officials, entrepreneurs, academics, lawyers, journalists, business angels, bankers etc. Information about our events can be found on the internet on Rezonance. These events allow people interested in the Life Sciences in Switzerland to meet several times a year and to network around high-quality events that address themes of common interest or concern. Should you be interested in knowing more about these events, speaking at one of them, or becoming a Bio Tuesday sponsor, please contact Genevieve Morand.
